The Human Rights Commission was created to provide better protection of human rights in Aotearoa and operates in accordance with the Human Rights Act 1993. They are funded through the Ministry of Justice but carry out their responsibilities independently of the New Zealand Government as an Independent Crown Entity.

The Commission is embarking on a period of exciting growth, stemming from its commitment to supporting whakamana tangata (a life of dignity for all). This growth will be managed around a continued investment in its staff, with a focus on building a truly Tiriti-based organisation.
The Kaitohu Tumuaki, Lead Advisor to the EEO Commissioner role sits along three other Lead Advisor roles to provide strategic and professional leadership, technical expertise, oversight, guidance and support across the full portfolio of respective Commissioners, as well as leading key projects and programmes on significant matters for the Commission.  This includes having robust conversations with senior leaders and Commissioners to ensure projects and work pieces are aligned with a te Tiriti based approach supporting the Commissioners’ priorities, capacity, and work plans.

This influential position is fast-paced and plays a pivotal role in supporting and leading the Commissioners work programmes for success.

You will have significant relevant experience operating at a senior advisory level or as a senior private secretary with Te Ao Māori/mātauranga Māori knowledge and expertise, including te reo me ōna tikanga, also being vital to succeed in this role. In addition, you will have:

  • Experience and/or expertise in one or more of the Commission’s priority population groups, including Māori, disabled people, Pacific peoples, ethnic minorities, migrant workers, people of diverse sexual orientation or gender identity, and women
  • Extensive experience managing internal and external relationships
  • Sophisticated understanding of human rights and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Refined skills in writing, critical analysis, presentation and communication for a variety of audiences
  • Political nous and an ability to be highly responsive in dynamic and intricate environments
  • Competent in applying influence and sound judgement
  • Proven resilience and exemplary relationship-building skills
  • The intellectual capability to work with multiple ideas in parallel as well as being able to integrate multiple concepts and deal comfortably with ambiguity
  • The ability to navigate comfortably through complex processes to achieve the desired outcomes for knotty, sensitive, or risky issues
